Copenhagen ranked worlds 6th most popular congress city

Print | Share

With a total of 103 international congresses held in 2009, Copenhagen underlines its position as one of the world's most appealing congress cities.

According to the latest published report from the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Copenhagen is the world's 6th most popular destination for international congresses.

This is based on figures from 2009, during which the city, among others, hosted the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology, with 13,500 participants and the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP15, with more than 30,000 delegates.

SAS halerMajor expansion ahead

The secret of Copenhagen's success as a congress city is partly explained by the short distances between its hotels and conference facilities, and the fact that Copenhagen Airport is Northern Europe's main air traffic hub.

The city boasts an international reputation for its low crime rate; general efficiency levels; its cultural and entertainment attractions; and the selection of good restaurants. The region's dynamic research and scientific environment is recognized internationally - the region is particularly strong within the medical and IT industries and within the cleantech area. On top Copenhagen is the greenest city in Europe.

Furthermore, the city's facilities have expanded dramatically during the last decade and continues to do so. Last year 1,600 new rooms were added to the cities hotel portfolio. This year will see the opening of the Tivoli Congress Center (fitting 4,000 delegates) and in direct conjunction the Tivoli Hotel offering 402 rooms, in the heart of Copenhagen. Next year the Bella Center will open the largest hotel in Scandinavia with 814 rooms.

An even larger number
The ICCA Statistics Reports are based on the ICCA Association Database, which means the figures cover meetings organised by international associations which take place on a regular basis and which rotate between a minimum of three countries.

It should be noted that, as well as the congresses registered with the ICCA, Copenhagen is also the host city for a considerable number of other meetings and congresses.
