Copenhagen to get major multipurpose arena

Print | Share

In 2013 Copenhagen will extend its existing portfolio of convention and event venues with a new multipurpose arena seating up to 15,000 people.

Copenhagen already offers a wide range of convention facilities but with increasing competition from other cities convention capacity is even more essential than ever. So, Wonderful Copenhagen CVB was delighted when, in March this year, Copenhagen City Council agreed to build the city's first multipurpose arena. The arena will be located in Ørestad South - a newly developed city area of Copenhagen, located only ten minutes from the airport and less than 15 minutes from the city centre.

"We look forward to the opening of the new multipurpose arena. For years we have wanted to bid on even larger conventions, sports and cultural events, and with the new arena this will be possible," says Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen.

58,000 m2
The new 58,000m2 arena is expected to be ready for use in July 2013 and will seat up to 15,000 people. The City of Copenhagen has appointed event giant AEG Worldwide to build the capital's new arena. AEG already runs 30 multipurpose arenas around the world and has committed to hold 40 sports and cultural events per year at the Copenhagen arena, leaving plenty of opportunities to use the venue for conventions and corporate events.

2009 the biggest event year ever
Wonderful Copenhagen CVB has been extremely successful in attracting major, prestigious events to Copenhagen over recent years, but 2009 is set to be the largest event year ever with, among others, the United Nations Climate Conference COP 15, and the International Olympic Committee's Session and Congress IOC taking place in the city in October and December respectively. The new arena will offer even greater potential to attract larger international events to Copenhagen.

"The decision to build the multipurpose arena is great news. It is amazing for both Copenhagen and Denmark. The arena is the last piece in the puzzle to make Copenhagen a true international capital," says Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, CEO, Wonderful Copenhagen CVB.

One-of-a-kind
Specialist sports architects and engineers are already hard at work designing the arena which, as with all the most recent architecture in Copenhagen, is expected to be one-of-a-kind. The drawings will be submitted to Copenhagen's City Council in early summer for final approval of the Dkr200 million project.
