And it is not just modern cargo boats, fishing vessels and speed boats that plough through the blue Oresund waves. Now and then it is possible to see an old schooner with its tall masts sailing gracefully across the water. A hundred years ago this impressive ship might have been on its way to Portugal loaded with fish. Today it is probably sailing a group of people who have chosen to let the salty sea air get their meeting or company party going. Historic shipsSailing in the traditional way under majestic sails instead of using motor power is an indescribable pleasure and a great way of spending time with other people. For company events, sailing out to sea for an adventure in a big sailboat with just your party on board is as close to perfect as you can get. The sailing company Danish Schooner Charter has specialised in company events on board the old, historic sailing ships. The company has ten of these old sailing ships in its fleet in the Oresund area and each ship has its own story. The oldest is the schooner Johanne, which was built as a cargo ship in 1895. The ketch Donna Wood is an old light vessel while the schooner Lilla Dan previously served as a training ship. In their younger days many of the ships transported loads of corn, salt, fish or beer both to other towns in Denmark and also to foreign locations. Dinner on boardA typical trip starts in the afternoon and lasts around five hours. Regardless of whether the ship has been chartered for a conference, a kick-off event or simply an incentive trip it always starts with an aperitif followed by the obligatory safety demonstration. Guests can join in setting sail or steering the ship to its final destination, which could be Middelgrunds Fort, Kronborg Castle in Elsinore or the Swedish island of Ven. While the party is either holding their meeting on deck or just relaxing and enjoying the trip in the fresh air, the chief steward is busy in the galley creating a delicious dinner. The largest of the schooners can seat 60 for dinner. Set sail from the airportIf you need to collect a group of guests in the airport, why not surprise them and make their first hours in Copenhagen truly memorable. In Dragør harbour, close to Copenhagen Airport, a three-masted schooner will be ready and waiting to transport your group of guests from the airport to the hotel. The trip from Dragør to Copenhagen’s harbour takes approximately three hours dependent on wind conditions – somewhat more than the 12 minute train trip to the centre. But what better way to start a stay in this harbour city than a refreshing and magnificent sailing trip with plenty of time to enjoy the champagne on the way. |
