Index 2005 bilSince designers of the 1950s such as Arne Jacobsen and Børge Mortensen, Copenhagen has been internationally recognised as a metropolis for design and architecture. In 2005 the design festival Index:2005 and the design conference ERA05 will take over the city reinforcing the city’s profile as a focal point for new ideas and a natural meeting place for creative industries.

Despite proud traditions, design in the 21st century is no longer just about dining tables and armchairs. The aim of Index:2005 is to move design into new focus areas. At the heart of the festival is the idea of design creating better living conditions for people. The same is true of the ERA05 conference, which is about the role of design in dealing with large global challenges such as migration and the multicultural society.

Awards

Index:2005 is an international event for design and innovation. This is the first time it is held in Copenhagen but it is set to return every fourth year. The festival has invited 150 design institutions from all over the world to exhibit projects which can improve people’s lives.

The five prizes of 100,000 euros each will be awarded on the 23rd September for the five categories: Body, Home, Work, Play and Community. In effect, Index:2005 will move design away from the traditional concept of aesthetic creation of products, and into the realm of design as a tool to solve more fundamental problems in people’s lives such as unemployment and polluted drinking water.

Design exhibitions in the city squares

After the winners have been found, Index:2005 will continue for three weeks with exhibitions of the 100 best design projects in five squares in the centre of Copenhagen. The public will be allowed to vote for their favourite project and decide the winner of the people’s choice prize. There is free entrance to the exhibitions on the squares, which will also be open and floodlit in the evenings.

In addition to the exhibition of design projects the Index:2005 festival also has a range of other elements. One of these is ”Future Scenarios”, which is a series of videos shown on screens in connection with the competition projects exhibition. ”Future Scenarios” has been created by a team of designers, design students, companies and futurologists and gives 10 different ideas of how life will look 50 years from now.

ERA05

And while the Index:2005 exhibitions fill the city squares, Copenhagen will also be filling up with visitors to the world conference for design ERA05, which is taking place in Bella Center from the 25th to the 28th September. 1400 designers, company directors, politicians and philosophers from all over the world are meeting to discuss solutions to global challenges – an area design has never before ventured into.

But before the delegates at ERA05 meet in Copenhagen they will have attended pre-conferences in the Scandinavian cities of Oslo, Gothenburg and Helsinki. When the 1,400 delegates finally meet for the main conference in the Danish capital, the programme will give them the opportunity to gain an insight into the various institutions of the Danish Design world. In addition to the conference activities in Bella Center, workshops and symposia will be held in the Danish Design Centre, Danish Architecture Centre, the Confederation of Danish Industries, Charlottenborg and the Danish Design School.

Creative metropolis

In the autumn of 2005, when Copenhagen is hosting both Index:2005 and ERA05, the world’s most creative minds will be gathered in the Danish capital. These events are not just about showcasing new design but will explore new ways of using design in an attempt to provide solutions to some of the greatest global challenges of our time. Copenhagen will then reveal its true colours as a world leader in the areas of design, creativity and innovation.
