Spouse programmes may typically be for women, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're for wimps. A challenging day out with the event company BANFF Outdoor Group is just the thing for gals with grit and adventuresome ladies.

The trip gets off to a flying start in Zodiac dinghies straight from the Copenhagen Marriott Hotel*****, which overlooks the Copenhagen waterfront and has its own jetty. The breakneck trip takes you to the island of Flakfortet, an old military fort just 15 minutes' sailing time from Copenhagen. During the morning, the old fort forms the backdrop for rappelling down the old elevator shafts and treasure hunting with maps, compasses and walkie-talkies.

After a well-deserved lunch in the fort's cosy restaurant, it's time for the water activities: kayak polo can stir even the most peaceful souls into action, and a game may begin to resemble a naval battle in which the participants don't just score goals, but also take a ducking or two while fighting for the ball. If the sun is shining, it's nice to relax in the sun after the game – and if the weather gods aren't quite so benevolent, the day can be rounded off with hot cocoa in the restaurant before the trip back to the mainland.
