Conran Opens Restaurants on Copenhagen Waterfront

This autumn Copenhagen residents and visitors will have a new food experience on the waterfront between Nyhavn and Knippelsbro: Custom House at Havnegade 44, which will be created and managed by London-based Conran Restaurants, founded by designer and restaurateur Terence Conran in 1991.

The wharf between Nyhavn and Knippelsbro has been quiet since 2002 when the hydrofoils that sailed between Copenhagen and Malmö were discontinued. But Havnegade is now coming back to life, with the City of Copenhagen initiating urban development on the waterfront and in the autumn, Conran Restaurants will be opening a collection of restaurants, bars and shops in the former hydrofoil terminal building. Although restaurant complexes of this kind are a familiar concept abroad, Custom House at Havnegade 44 is the first of its kind in Denmark.

- Copenhagen Harbour has always been an animated and popular meeting place, comments Magnus Bergh, General Manager of Custom House. - We are looking forward to playing a part in the rejuvenation of this area when we open Custom House.

Three Restaurants - Three Views of the Water
Custom House will encompass three different restaurants, each with its own chef, menu and views of the water: Bar & Grill (brasserie), Bacino (Italian) and Ebisu (Japanese). There will also be two cocktail bars and a delicatessen, where customers can choose from a range of quality food products and wine, buy freshly baked bread and pastries or simply pop in for a cup of coffee.

In addition, Custom House will offer two private dining rooms, which can be used for functions ranging from small private dinners, Christmas parties and weddings to larger business conferences. Custom House will offer private dining for up to 16 people and banqueting for up to 80 people.

The design and conversion of Custom House is being lead by Conran & Partners, Terence Conran's design and architecture practice. Conran & Partners has substantial experience in urban regeneration, notably the development of Butler's Wharf by the Thames in London. Today, it is buzzing with cafés, galleries, restaurants and shops, and this is an inspiration for this development in Copenhagen.

London, Paris, New York and Copenhagen
Conran Restaurants has opened restaurants in London, Paris and New York and no two restaurants are alike - each has developed its own distinctive personality and character and has its own loyal band of customers.

The opening in Copenhagen is a natural development for Terence Conran as he has been a regular visitor to the city since the fifties and has always been passionate about Danish design.

Custom House at Havnegade 44 is set to open in the Autumn 2006.
