Madeleines - A Gastronautical Experience
In the old Tuborg factory in Copenhagen's Islands Brygge neighbourhood, the brainchild of eminent theatre/production designer, Nikolaj Danielsen and culinary doyen Mette Sia Martinussen of acclaimed Danish restaurant 1th. has come to life.
Madeleines Madteater takes the experience of eating to a welcome extreme... and with it has taken Copenhagen by storm. Madeleines is about the meal as theatre, stimulating every sense in order to amplify the event of eating; an entirely unique experience that has already met with critical acclaim.
Food Takes Center Stage
Each dining 'performance' is centred on a concept developed in conjunction with a creative board of experts including a psychotherapist, an installation artist and a musician amongst others. The entire three-hour performance is extraordinary but the unwavering star of the show is Madeleines exquisite cuisine.
Inhale a puff of minty air while bubbles cascade around you. Pick tender chunks of delicately poached duck from what appears to be a child's lunchbox. All the while music, lights and imagery elevate the experience to the sublime. Madeleines is a culinary adventure that evokes and deconstructs vivid memories, feelings and sensations.
Proustian Roots
The name 'Madeleines' is inspired by Marcel Proust's autobiography In Search of Lost Time, in which the act of eating a Madeleine cake evokes a vivid memory of the first time he ate one as a child.
The creative partnership behind Madeleines has already spawned 1th., a restaurant located in a first floor flat in central Copenhagen, in which a dinner party is staged to make diners feel like exclusive guests. Mettes Sommerbus was a project created in summer 2001; a concept kitchen on wheels that toured Denmark's most picturesque locations, creating meals based on local ingredients.
Conviviality gone wild... for the epicurious only.
