Copenhagen's Hotel Development: Facelifts, Expansions and Brand New Hotels
During 2005 Copenhagen expanded its hotel capacity with 530 new hotel rooms, and in 2006 the city has continued this expansion with a further 450 rooms. At the same time a number of existing hotels have completed or will complete renovations. As a result, the city will offer a wide selection of contemporary hotels.
Since 1999 Copenhagen has increased its hotel capacity by more than 40 per cent. Currently, the Danish capital offers more than 13,000 hotel rooms in total. The city presents a wide range of overnight accommodation, from top-class, five-star hotels, to the low-price accommodation in a contemporary design style at Europe's largest city hostel.
In 2005 Copenhagen welcomed five new hotels and, in 2006, another two has already been added to its impressive portfolio. Adina Apartment Hotel Copenhagen**** opened in January offering 126 hotel apartments just 10 minutes from the City Hall Square. Meanwhile, opened late June is Copenhagen Island, a unique hotel, designed by the Danish architect Kim Utzon and located on an artificial island in Copenhagen harbour. Copenhagen Island offers 326 rooms.
Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, Managing Director of Wonderful Copenhagen CVB, comments:
- In 2005 Copenhagen was again rated as one of the world's top ten most popular cities for international conventions. Both hotel and airlift capacity has been expanding in recent years, which gives room for further growth in the future in both leisure and convention visitors. The external outlook for further development of the convention market in Copenhagen is also looking good due to the positive economic development in the greater Copenhagen region, which includes a remarkable growth in both Danish and foreign direct investments into the region.
The Copenhagen hotel boom began in 1999 with the opening of the First Hotel Vesterbro****. In 2001 both the 382-room Hilton Copenhagen Airport***** and the 395-room Copenhagen Marriott Hotel***** opened their doors, at the same time as a number of existing hotels commenced renovation and/or expansion. These projects signalled the start of a major expansion in the number of hotels in the city, an expansion that continues to this day.
As well as these significant increases in capacity, the fixed link between Sweden and Denmark - which opened in July 2000 - has meant that more than 28,000 hotel rooms are now available in the Øresund Region as a whole, encompassing Copenhagen and Malmø.
