Amalienborg Castle Amalienborg med garden i gala

It is where Queen Margrethe lives most of the year. Every day at noon you can witness the change of the Royal Guard. And when the Queen is at home it is accompanied by music. Check if the flag is up on Christian IX's palace, which is situated to the right when you face Amaliehaven (Amalie Garden). If it is up, the Queen is at home.

Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle in Elsinore is one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles. Known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark. Visit the King's Chamber, the Castle Chapel and the Royal Apartments. Older kids will most likely enjoy the exciting thrill of a visit to the dark and humid casemates underneath the castle. There sits Holger Danske sound asleep and with his arms crossed over his sword. The myth goes that if Denmark is ever threatened by a foreign enemy, the stone figure will turn into flesh and blood, and Holger Danske will rise to defend his homeland.

Christiansborg Palace

Slotsholmen is merely a small island in the heart of Copenhagen which many people do not even realise is an island. On it you will find Christiansborg Palace, which houses the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court. The Royal Reception Rooms in the palace's north wing, the palace church and most of the Riding Ground Complex are available to the Royal Family. If you ask the kids, however, it is probably more exciting what lies beneath the palace; the ruins of Bishop Absalon's fortress and Copenhagen Castle.
