Ice cream shops with quality, and even low fat, homemade ice cream in all possible flavours, mixes and sizes are Copenhagen's brand new thing. The fine taste which has dominated the city's micro breweries, tea saloons and coffee bars for years, has now hit the ice cream shops. Here is a small selection of some of the best places to check out during those warm summer days.
Bojesen Is by Nørreport
Rasmus Bo Bojesen is probably best known for his fine chocolate, but besides the chocolate production he also has a bakery, confectionery and an ice cream shop. At Frederiksborggade 3, by Kultorvet and Nørreport Station, you can taste his ice cream, which has a fine, strong taste to it.
Rubber Duck Frozen Yoghurt
With a low fat percentage of only 0,4 you can almost eat as much ice cream as you want without worrying about gaining weight. The owners behind this brand new ice cream shop in the district of Nørrebro were astonished that there were no frozen yoghurt ice cream in Copenhagen, so they decided to sell it themselves. You can choose from a selection of toppings - the healthy choice of fruit, or the unhealthy, but delicious, choice of M&M's, Oreos and other sweets.
Vanilla in the district of Vestebro
Owned by Jolanta Kecowska, originally from Bulgaria, but her ice cream is Italian. Here there are 25 flavours, the common ones as well as the more exotic varieties such as the chocolate/chili-ice cream. The ice machine comes from Italy, from where Jolanta also gets the various concentrates, say for example strawberry, which she then mixes into her basic ice cream. Half the ice cream at Vanilla's is made of milk, the other half is sherbet and ice cream without sugar or fat.
Markus Grigo ice cream
The German dessert chef has worked at the gourmet restaurant Søllerød Kro for many years, where he receives great reviews and stars. His gourmet ice cream is primarilly creamy, non-fat sorbets, and you can choose from a selection of 12 flavours. Several places in Copenhagen sell Markus Grigo ice cream, among others Flamingo Is
in the district of Frederiksberg. If you are heading north of Copenhagen, Markus Grigo has hos own ice cream shop in Hornbæk.
Cold Stone Creamery in Tivoli
Like it, Love it or Gotta have it? The American Cold Stone Creamery has three sizes of ice cream. The newly opened shop in Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens brings a new concept to the Danish capital; in stead of toppings, you get Mix-ins. Choose your favourite flavour of ice cream like birthday cake, coffee, coconut, mint or something more traditional, and instead of topping the ice cream with berries, bananas, brownies, Oreos, M&M's, chocolate, nuts or liquorice, it is mixed into the ice cream on a frozen granite stone. You can also get smoothies and a variety of fat-free options. And do not be surprised if the staff starts singing. It is all part of the Cold Stone Creamery experience.
Paradis Is all over town
In just five years, Paradis Is has opened ten ice cream outlets in the capital. Thor Thorøe, the man behind, has worked in an Italian gelateria, and this was the start of his ice cream dynasty. Paradis Is' trademark is that the ice cream is never more than 24 hours old, and the choices of flavour follow the seasons. One of the Paradis Is classics is chocolate ice cream. It consists of a blend of sweet, light cocoa and strong dark cocoa. Simply heaven! There are outlets in the districts of Amager, Østerbro, Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro, Hellerup, Valby, city centre and in Hørsholm.
